Fuel Monitoring

In Arabicمراقبة الوقود

In short

Following each vehicle's tank level, fuel use, fills and sudden losses as they happen, from vehicle data or a sensor fitted to the tank.

What is fuel monitoring in fleet management?

Fuel monitoring tells you how many litres are in the tank now, how much each trip burned, when the vehicle was filled and when fuel vanished without reason. Its purpose is to tie every litre you pay for to a vehicle, a trip and a driver.

Data comes from the vehicle's CAN Bus on newer models, a level sensor in the tank, or a flow meter on the fuel line. What monitoring can reveal depends on the source: detecting fills and drains needs an accurate tank level.

How it works

  1. 1Sensor or CAN Bus reads the fuel
  2. 2Device sends reading with position
  3. 3Platform calculates use and flags events

Why does fuel monitoring matter in fleet management?

Fuel is the largest variable cost in most fleets, often more than a quarter of operating spend. Station invoices show what you paid, not where it went. Monitoring exposes the thirsty truck, the long idle and the suspicious drop on the day they happen, not at month-end when they are hard to investigate.

What you gain

  • Fuel used on every trip
  • Fills and drains detected automatically
  • Vehicles and drivers compared

How does Safee help with fuel monitoring?

Safee brings fuel data from CAN Bus and different sensor types into one platform, and its Fuel Explorer shows each vehicle's tank level, consumption, remaining range and Fuel History. You get an instant alert on fills and sudden drops, and the same figures in regular reports ready for a management meeting.

A field example

Sharjah · Waste collection

A waste collection company in Sharjah runs 80 compactor trucks and used to check diesel invoices only at month-end. It fitted tank sensors to the older trucks and used CAN Bus on the newer ones. Six trucks turned out to burn about 15% above their model average, and queuing at the landfill was eating 9% of all fuel. The workshop fixed injectors on three trucks and management staggered landfill slots; the fuel bill fell 11% within three months.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a sensor in the tank to monitor fuel?

Not always. Many newer vehicles report consumption and level over CAN Bus; older vehicles and plant usually need an external sensor or a flow meter.

Which is more accurate, CAN Bus or an external sensor?

CAN Bus needs no extra hardware and gives good consumption figures, but its tank level is approximate. A calibrated sensor is better at catching fills and drains.

How is fuel monitoring different from fuel cards?

A fuel card records what was bought; monitoring records what reached the tank and what was burned. Putting the two together is what exposes the gaps.
