Idle Time
In Arabicوقت الخمول
Time during which a vehicle's engine is running while it is stationary, burning fuel without covering any distance.
What is idle time in fleet management?
Idling means zero speed with the engine on: waiting at a customer, running the air-conditioning during a break, warming up the engine. Some of it is unavoidable; most of it wastes fuel and adds engine wear with nothing produced.
A tracking system infers idling from the speed and ignition signals. In Safee an idling vehicle shows orange on the map, and idle time is calculated for every trip together with its share of trip duration.
How it works
- 1Unit detects zero speed, engine on
- 2Platform times each idle period
- 3Alarms and reports flag excess
Why does idle time matter in fleet management?
A heavy truck burns roughly 2 to 4 litres per idle hour. In a Gulf summer drivers may idle for hours to keep the cab cool, pushing up the fuel bill and adding engine hours that bring services forward. Cutting idle time is one of the fastest and cheapest savings, because it needs only monitoring and coaching.
What you gain
- Direct fuel savings
- Less engine wear
- Lower emissions
How does Safee help reduce idle time?
Safee alerts you as soon as idling passes the limit you accept, and gives you a report ranking vehicles and drivers by idle hours and location, with the fuel burned while idling where fuel data is available. You see where fuel is going and who needs coaching, instead of finding the waste in the month-end fuel bill.
A field example
A school-bus operator in Muscat found fuel use high despite short routes. The idle report showed 30 buses idling about 90 minutes a day outside schools, air-conditioning on, waiting for pupils. Management set a rule: engines on no more than 10 minutes before dismissal, with an alarm to the supervisor when exceeded. Idling dropped to 25 minutes a day and the company saved about 18% on fuel.
Frequently asked questions
Does stopping with the air-conditioning on count as idling?
Yes. Any stop with the engine running counts as idling whatever the reason; whether to accept it is a management decision.
How much idle time is acceptable?
Most fleets set a limit of 5 to 15 minutes per stop, depending on climate and the type of work.
