Odometer

In Arabicعداد المسافة

In short

The cumulative total distance a vehicle has travelled, and the reference that service schedules are built on.

What is an odometer in fleet management?

The odometer records the total kilometres a vehicle has covered. Service schedules, manufacturer warranties and rental contracts are all based on it, and it drives resale value.

In Safee the tracker calculates distance from GPS positions or reads it over CAN Bus where available. The system reading can drift from the dashboard after a tracker is fitted to a used vehicle or replaced, so it can be corrected with the Edit Vehicle Odometer action when any maintenance task is resolved.

How it works

  1. 1Tracker measures distance travelled
  2. 2System totals it cumulatively
  3. 3Reading corrected at service if needed

Why do odometer readings matter in fleet management?

A wrong odometer reading means service at the wrong time, rejected warranty claims and inaccurate per-kilometre rental invoices. Relying on readings sent in by drivers invites errors and manipulation; an automatic reading from the tracker is consistent and available for every vehicle at once.

What you gain

  • Basis for distance-based service
  • Automatic reading, no driver input
  • Correctable to match the dashboard

How does Safee help keep odometer readings accurate?

Safee reads every vehicle's distance automatically, so service dates are built on it without waiting for drivers' readings. If it drifts from the dashboard, it is corrected at the next service and schedules stay in line with the dealer's.

A field example

Sharjah · Car rental

A Sharjah rental company replaced the trackers in 70 cars, and system readings drifted from the dashboards by up to 4,000 km, so oil alerts arrived at the wrong time. At each car's next service the workshop entered the dashboard reading in the system. Within two months readings matched and service dates were back in line with the dealer schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the tracking system's odometer differ from the car's?

The device counts from the day it was installed, and GPS gaps or a device swap can add drift. You can correct the reading manually to match the dashboard.

What is the difference between odometer and mileage?

The odometer is a cumulative reading over the vehicle's whole life; mileage is the distance covered in a given trip or period.
