Distance-Based Maintenance
In Arabicالصيانة حسب المسافة المقطوعة
Scheduling service every time a vehicle covers a set distance, such as an oil change every 10,000 km.
What is distance-based maintenance in fleet management?
Distance-based maintenance is the most common form of preventive maintenance for road vehicles: oil, filters, tyres and brakes wear in proportion to distance driven, so their service points are tied to kilometres.
In Safee this is the Periodic Distance Elapsed trigger, which fires an alarm each time the vehicle covers the set distance. The next cycle can be counted from the actual service rather than the due point, with the option 'Reset the task periodic counter/timer upon resolving due task'.
How it works
- 1Distance between services set
- 2Kilometres accumulated from the tracker
- 3Alarm when distance is reached
Why does distance-based maintenance matter in fleet management?
Changing oil too early wastes oil and labour on every vehicle; changing it too late speeds up engine wear. Tying service to the distance measured by the tracker, not a driver's estimate, puts each vehicle on its correct schedule, especially when daily distances vary widely across the fleet.
What you gain
- Service follows actual wear
- No reliance on driver readings
- Cycle restarts from real service
How does Safee help with distance-based maintenance?
Safee totals each vehicle's actual kilometres from the tracker and alerts you when service distance is reached, so every vehicle is serviced on what it really drove, not one schedule for all. Busy vehicles stop overrunning, and quiet ones are not serviced before they need it.
A field example
A Jeddah last-mile operator with 120 vans covering 120 to 350 km a day changed oil every two months across the board. Safee data showed half the vans never reached 10,000 km in two months, while some passed it in one. The company moved to servicing every 10,000 km, cut oil changes on its quieter vans by about a quarter and stopped its busiest vans overrunning their service.
Frequently asked questions
How many kilometres between oil changes for fleet trucks?
The manufacturer sets it by engine and oil grade, and it varies widely between models. In heat, dust and on unpaved roads, use the shorter severe-duty schedule in the handbook.
Where does the system get distance travelled from?
From the tracker fitted to the vehicle, calculated from GPS positions or read from CAN Bus data where available.
