SP-2000
In Arabicمعيار SP-2000
The road safety standard issued by Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), followed by operators and contractors across Oman's oil and gas sector.
What is SP-2000 in fleet management?
SP-2000 is a road safety standard issued by Petroleum Development Oman. Since its fourth version (2017) it has been an OPAL standard that applies across the Omani oil and gas sector, covering operators, contractors and subcontractors, and PDO has since issued a fifth version. It requires an OPAL-approved IVMS and a speed limiter in every vehicle, sets speed caps by road type, such as 80 km/h on graded roads for all vehicle types in version 4, and calls for monitoring of speeding, seat belts, harsh braking and acceleration, a driver ID key without which the vehicle will not start, journey management and RAG driver ranking.
How it works
- 1IVMS records driving events
- 2Driver score calculated against distance
- 3Driver ranked red, amber or green
Why does SP-2000 matter in fleet management?
Oil and gas clients in Oman audit their contractors' IVMS data against this standard, and a contractor that falls short puts its contract at risk. A fleet that already measures in SP-2000 terms can show its red drivers and its corrective action without reworking the data.
What you gain
- Eligibility for oil and gas contracts
- Scoring matches client audits
- Speeds kept to road-type limits
How does Safee help you comply with SP-2000?
Safee implements the SP2000 alarms group, from the Buzzer Alarm to Excessive Overspeed, Start Without Driver and seat belts, scores each driver and ranks them by colour in the SP2000 RAG Report. The IVMS Road Safety Report builds yearly statistics from the same data for audits.
A field example
An oil-field transport contractor in Nizwa moved its 75 vehicles to SP-2000 scoring before a client audit. The first monthly RAG report put 11 drivers in red, eight for repeated excessive overspeed on the same desert highway. Supervisors held one-to-one reviews and split that run with a planned rest stop. Three months later two drivers were in red and the audit closed with no IVMS findings.
Frequently asked questions
Who has to comply with SP-2000?
Operators, contractors, subcontractors and service providers working on oil and gas contracts in Oman, with their vehicles and drivers.
What do the RAG colours mean?
They rank drivers by their violation score against distance: green is good, amber needs follow-up, red calls for immediate action. The company sets the limits for each colour.
Will any tracker meet the standard?
No. SP-2000 requires an IVMS approved by OPAL, together with a speed limiter and a driver ID key.
