Telematics
In Arabicالتليماتكس
Collecting vehicle data remotely, from location to engine, fuel, sensors and driver behaviour, and sending it to a central platform for analysis.
What is telematics in fleet management?
Telematics combines telecommunications and informatics. In fleets it means a unit in the vehicle that reads position from GPS, reads engine status, sensor inputs or CAN Bus data, and sends it all over the mobile network or satellite to a platform that analyses it.
Safee is a telematics platform: it receives messages from devices of different makes and protocols and turns them into live location, trips, alarms, and reports on fuel, temperature, load and driving behaviour.
How it works
- 1Unit reads position and sensors
- 2Sends the data to the server
- 3Platform analyses, alerts and reports
Why does telematics matter in fleet management?
Tracking tells you where the vehicle is; telematics tells you what it is doing: whether the engine is running, how many litres it used, whether the reefer door opened, whether the driver braked harshly. With that data the fleet becomes an operation you can measure and improve, not a cost you struggle to control.
What you gain
- Visibility of engine, fuel and sensors
- Decisions based on figures
- Basis for safety and compliance
How does Safee help you use telematics data?
Safee reads what the tracker and the sensors fitted to each vehicle report, such as fuel, temperature, weight, fridge door and CAN Bus data, and turns it into figures, alarms and reports per vehicle. The data can also flow into the company's other systems, such as accounting and ERP, so the numbers reach the people who need them without re-keying.
A field example
A chilled-food distributor in Jeddah was losing loads to temperature rises without knowing where they happened. It fitted temperature probes and door sensors alongside the trackers on 40 trucks. The data showed doors left open for more than 15 minutes at some outlets. After driver training and an alarm for doors left open too long, rejected loads fell by 70% in two months.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between telematics and GPS?
GPS only fixes position. Telematics covers position plus engine, fuel and sensor data, and how that data is transmitted and analysed.
How is telematics different from a fleet tracking system?
Telematics is the technology: collecting and transmitting vehicle data remotely. A fleet tracking system is the product you buy and use: the devices and platform built on that technology.
Does telematics require modifying the vehicle?
Usually it only needs a tracker wired to power and ignition; sensors or a CAN Bus connection are added when needed.
