Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)
In Arabicالوزن الإجمالي للمركبة (GVW)
The total weight of a vehicle at a given moment: chassis, fuel, driver and load together.
What is gross vehicle weight (GVW) in fleet management?
Gross vehicle weight is what the laden vehicle reads on a weighbridge. It is not the same as the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), the manufacturer's maximum, nor the gross combination weight (GCW) of a tractor with its trailer. Road, bridge and overload limits are all set against these figures.
GVW comes either from a weighbridge or live, by adding up the axle weights measured by on-board weight sensors.
How it works
- 1Sensors measure load on each axle
- 2System adds up axles and units
- 3Gross weight shown live
Why does gross vehicle weight (GVW) matter in fleet management?
Running above the rated gross weight means brakes working beyond their design, tyres overheating and blowing, and engines and gearboxes wearing out early. Add fines, vehicles held at weigh stations, and a weaker position with insurers if an overweight vehicle is involved in a crash.
What you gain
- Within road limits
- Longer brake and tyre life
- Weight data ready for regulators
How does Safee help you monitor gross vehicle weight?
Safee adds axle weights into a gross weight for every tractor and trailer and shows it live in the Weight Explorer with its history. In Saudi Arabia, weight is sent with position to the WASL platform for registered vehicles, so the data is ready whenever the regulator asks.
A field example
A rebar haulier in Sohar runs 25 tractors with flatbed trailers. The workshop noticed that 8 of them needed brake linings every 4 months instead of 8. Weight data showed those vehicles regularly running about 4 tonnes over their rated gross weight because the warehouse loaded by bundle count rather than by weight. Loading moved to weight, backed by a Load Weight Limit alarm, and lining intervals were back to normal within 6 months.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GVW and GVWR?
GVW is what the vehicle weighs right now; GVWR is the maximum the manufacturer allows. GVW must always stay below GVWR.
Does gross vehicle weight include the driver and fuel?
Yes. It covers everything on the vehicle: chassis, fuel, driver and load.
