Payload

In Arabicالحمولة الصافية

In short

The weight of the goods or material carried, i.e. gross vehicle weight minus the vehicle's empty (tare) weight.

What is payload in fleet management?

Payload is what the vehicle is actually carrying, whether cement, water or parcels, without the weight of the truck itself. It is gross weight minus tare weight. Every vehicle has a maximum payload set by the manufacturer, and axle limits may cap it further.

Payload is known either from the weighbridge ticket when leaving the loading site, or live from weight sensors calibrated against the empty vehicle.

How it works

  1. 1Sensors measure gross weight live
  2. 2Calibrated tare weight is subtracted
  3. 3Net payload shown for each unit

Why does payload matter in fleet management?

Payload is what the customer pays for. A truck running half-full burns fuel and driver hours for less revenue; one loaded beyond capacity wears tyres and brakes and attracts fines. Average payload per trip is one of the clearest efficiency measures in heavy haulage.

What you gain

  • Capacity utilisation measured
  • Invoicing on actual weight
  • Near-empty trips exposed

How does Safee help measure payload?

Safee shows payload, labelled Load weight, for every tractor and trailer separately from total weight and records it with each trip. You can compare average payload with each vehicle's capacity and see which trips run nearly empty and which loading sites waste capacity.

A field example

Riyadh · Bulk cement

A cement plant in Riyadh delivers bulk cement with 30 tankers rated at 34 tonnes each. Weight data showed an average payload of only 27 tonnes, because night-shift tankers were loaded in a rush before the silos closed. Management rescheduled the loading slots, average payload rose to 33 tonnes, and monthly trips fell by about 18% for the same volume.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between payload and gross vehicle weight?

Gross weight includes the vehicle, fuel, driver and load; payload is the cargo alone.

What is tare weight?

The weight of the vehicle ready to drive with no load. It is subtracted from gross weight to give payload.

How do I work out my truck's maximum payload?

Subtract the empty weight from the manufacturer's maximum gross weight, then make sure the load distribution keeps every axle within its limit.
