GPS Signal Quality

In Arabicجودة إشارة GPS

In short

How well a tracker receives satellites and fixes an accurate position, measured in practice by the number of satellites it uses in each message.

What is GPS signal quality in fleet management?

A tracker needs at least four satellites to calculate its position, and the more it sees, spread across the sky, the more accurate the fix. Many devices send the satellite count and an HDOP value with each position; the lower the HDOP, the more trustworthy the fix.

Signal drops under bridges, in covered car parks, between tall buildings, or when the antenna sits under metal or metallic window film. Safee shows the satellite count with every message.

How it works

  1. 1Tracker receives satellite signals
  2. 2Sends satellite count with position
  3. 3Weak-signal vehicles are flagged

Why does GPS signal quality matter in fleet management?

Weak signal means positions that jump, inflated distances, geofence entries that never happened and phantom speeding charged to the driver. Catching it early tells you what is needed: a technician to refit the unit, or a conversation with a driver who may be covering it.

What you gain

  • Trustworthy positions and distances
  • Fewer phantom speed alarms
  • Exposes poor installations

How does Safee help you monitor GPS signal quality?

Safee shows the satellite count with every message, groups weak-signal vehicles in the Dashboard's GPS Signal widget, and charts each vehicle's signal in the Satellite Signal Statistic on its Vehicle Dashboard over the period you pick. You can tell whether the weakness is constant, pointing to the installation, or limited to particular places.

A field example

Abu Dhabi · Last-mile e-commerce

A delivery company in Abu Dhabi noticed that ten of its vans logged far more daily mileage than the rest of the fleet. Their messages showed no more than 3 satellites all day, and the units turned out to be fitted under a metallic heat shield in the dashboard. The antennas were moved to an open spot, mileage returned to normal and the phantom speeding alarms stopped.

Frequently asked questions

How many satellites does a tracker need for an accurate fix?

At least four, ideally eight or more. Below that, position and speed are unreliable.

Does window tint weaken GPS?

Some metallic films weaken it noticeably, so mount the antenna behind an untinted section or under a non-metallic surface.

Why does a parked vehicle jump around on the map?

The tracker is seeing few satellites or signals reflected off buildings, so the calculated position shifts slightly. It is common in covered car parks and between tall buildings.
