Harsh Acceleration
In Arabicالتسارع القاسي
A sudden rise in speed above a set threshold within seconds, picked up by the tracker; a sign of rushed driving that wastes fuel.
What is harsh acceleration in fleet management?
Harsh acceleration is when the driver floors the throttle and speed rises faster than a set threshold within a few seconds. The tracker's motion sensor measures it, and the threshold is set in the device configuration to suit the vehicle type.
Fleets log each event against whoever was driving and compare drivers on events per 100 km, not raw counts. It is a standard item on driver scorecards and RAG ratings.
How it works
- 1Sensor detects a sudden speed rise
- 2Device sends a harsh acceleration event
- 3Event logged to driver and vehicle
Why does harsh acceleration matter in fleet management?
Every hard launch burns fuel that does no work and strains the gearbox and tyres; on a loaded truck it can shift the cargo. A harsh acceleration is often followed by a harsh brake seconds later, so it is an early sign of a rushed driver who needs coaching before something goes wrong.
What you gain
- Lower fuel use
- Longer tyre and gearbox life
- Early warning of risky driving
How does Safee help reduce harsh acceleration?
Safee receives the event from the device as it happens and can alert the supervisor straight away. It also rolls events up into driver scoring per 100 km, so you can see who needs coaching and whether they improve afterwards.
A field example
A bottled-water distributor in Jeddah noticed that 12 city delivery trucks were burning about 15% more fuel than the rest of the fleet. Driver scoring showed their drivers logging 9 harsh accelerations per 100 km against 2 for everyone else. The company ran short coaching sessions and linked part of the monthly bonus to the score. Two months later the rate was down to 3, and fuel use on those trucks had dropped 8%.
Frequently asked questions
How is harsh acceleration different from speeding?
Speeding is going over the limit; harsh acceleration is how quickly speed builds. A driver can accelerate violently without ever breaking the limit.
What counts as harsh acceleration?
Anything above a threshold set in the tracker. It is usually higher for a light vehicle and lower for a heavy truck, which cannot accelerate as quickly.
