Night Driving

In Arabicالقيادة الليلية

In short

Driving during the hours of darkness defined by company policy, treated in safety management as a factor that raises crash risk.

What is night driving in fleet management?

Night driving combines three risks: poorer visibility, stronger drowsiness as the body wants to sleep, and fewer services on the road, especially on desert roads where stray camels cross. Many oil and gas operators ban it without a permit or limit it to certain roads.

Tracking systems detect night driving by comparing vehicle movement with the restricted hours. In Safee it is detected with the Out of Working Hours alarm condition set to those hours, and appears as a separate risk-exposure item in the monthly four-colour RALG driver rating.

How it works

  1. 1Define restricted night hours
  2. 2Detect any movement within them
  3. 3Alarm and item in driver rating

Why does night driving matter in fleet management?

The risk of a fatal crash per kilometre is markedly higher at night than by day. Controlling night driving protects drivers and meets the journey-management terms of oil and gas contracts, which can revoke a driver's permit for unauthorised night trips.

What you gain

  • Fewer night-time crashes
  • Journey-management compliance
  • Unauthorised trips exposed

How does Safee help control night driving?

Safee alerts the supervisor when a vehicle moves during restricted hours and counts each driver's night trips over the month. The safety manager sees who drives at night and how often, and can check it against the permits issued.

A field example

Al Ahsa · Oil-field services

An oil-field services firm in Al Ahsa bans driving on desert roads between 7 pm and 5 am without a permit. It monitored 35 vehicles during those hours, and the first monthly rating showed 23 night trips, 15 of them unpermitted. The company arranged accommodation near remote sites so crews did not drive back after dark. By the third month only two night trips were logged, both permitted.

Frequently asked questions

Is night driving always a violation?

No. It is a risk factor governed by company policy, which is why the RALG rating treats it as risk exposure rather than an IVMS violation.

When do night hours start in safety policies?

Each company decides. Some use sunset to sunrise; others use a fixed window such as 7 pm to 5 am.
