Over-the-Air (OTA) Configuration

In Arabicالإعداد عبر الهواء (OTA)

In short

Changing a tracker's settings or updating its firmware remotely over the mobile network, without sending a technician to the vehicle.

What is over-the-air (OTA) configuration in fleet management?

Every tracker carries settings that define its behaviour: reporting interval, speed thresholds for its own alarms, input functions. OTA configuration pushes changes from the platform straight to the device. Firmware over the air (FOTA) goes further, fixing device bugs and adding functions.

In Safee configuration commands can be sent to one device or, through the Custom Bulk Commands page, to a group of devices of the same model in one batch.

How it works

  1. 1New setting prepared
  2. 2Platform sends it to devices
  3. 3Device applies it and confirms

Why does over-the-air (OTA) configuration matter in fleet management?

A technician visit to one vehicle costs hours of labour and downtime, and far more when vehicles sit at remote desert sites. OTA reconfigures hundreds of units in a day. The flip side is that one wrong command can silence a whole fleet, so permissions must be tight and changes trialled first.

What you gain

  • No technician visits
  • Fleet-wide changes, fast
  • Record of every change

How does Safee help you configure trackers over the air?

Safee sends configuration commands to one device or to many of the same model in one batch, and keeps retrying vehicles that are switched off or out of coverage until they connect. It records the result of each command, so you know which units have taken the new setting and which are still pending.

A field example

Jeddah · Cold-chain food distribution

A Jeddah chilled-food distributor wanted to lower the device speed-alarm threshold on 85 trucks from 120 to 100 km/h. Rather than bring the trucks into the workshop, it tested the new setting on 3 trucks, then sent it to the rest in one batch. By the end of the first day 82 of the 85 trucks had applied it, and the last 3 did so once switched on, saving about 40 technician hours.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if the vehicle is switched off?

The command stays pending and the platform keeps retrying until the device connects or the retry window ends.

What is the difference between OTA configuration and a firmware update?

Configuration changes values inside the current software, such as the reporting interval; a firmware update replaces the software itself with a newer version.

Do all trackers support OTA configuration?

Most modern trackers do, but the available commands depend on the device type and its protocol.
