Polygon Geofence

In Arabicالمنطقة الجغرافية المضلعة

In short

A geofence drawn point by point to follow the real boundary of a site, whatever its shape.

What is a polygon geofence in fleet management?

A polygon geofence is drawn by marking the corners of a site one after another, so it takes the site's true shape: a rectangular yard, a port stretched along the coast, an industrial compound with an irregular fence line.

It is the most precise geofence type and the one most used in alarms and reports, because its edges follow the fence and gates rather than an approximate circle.

How it works

  1. 1Site corners are marked in order
  2. 2The shape closes around the site
  3. 3Platform detects crossings of its edges

Why does a polygon geofence matter in fleet management?

A large site next to a motorway cannot be covered by a circle without catching passing traffic. A polygon follows the actual boundary, so entry, exit and dwell times are correct, and there are fewer false alarms, which quickly erode supervisors' trust in the system.

What you gain

  • Accurate entry and exit times
  • Fewer false alarms
  • Reliable figures for large sites

How does Safee help you draw and use polygon geofences?

The polygon is Safee's main geofence type, and hundreds can be imported from a KML file rather than drawn by hand. Entry and exit alarms, dwell times and visit reports are built on it, accurate enough to use when negotiating waiting time with customers.

A field example

Jubail · Container haulage

A container haulier in Jubail used a large circle around the port, which logged a visit every time a truck drove the coastal road. It redrew the port as a 14-point polygon following the fence and gates. Recorded daily port visits fell from 310 to 190, matching the gate logs. Average waiting time inside the port became a figure the company could rely on in rate negotiations.

Frequently asked questions

How many points does a polygon need?

Enough to follow the real boundary: four for a rectangular yard, fifteen or more for an irregular site.

Can polygons be imported instead of drawn?

Yes. Sites are usually imported from a KML file, a format most mapping tools can export.
