Low Fuel Indicator
In Arabicمؤشر انخفاض الوقود
A flag raised when a vehicle's fuel falls below a set share of the tank, so it is refuelled in time, before it runs dry or its trip is delayed.
What is a low fuel indicator in fleet management?
A vehicle running dry mid-route means a lost trip and a recovery bill. So fleet managers set a minimum percentage of the tank for each vehicle, and any vehicle below it is treated as due for refuelling.
The percentage should come from the longest gap between fuel stations on the vehicle's route, not from guesswork. The indicator needs a tank level reading, from a sensor or the CAN Bus.
How it works
- 1Set a minimum percentage per vehicle
- 2Compare the level against it
- 3List the vehicles running low
Why does a low fuel indicator matter in fleet management?
Planned refuelling is cheaper than emergency refuelling: the driver goes to the company or contracted station rather than the nearest pump at any price. It also prevents breakdowns on roads far from services, a real risk on desert highways between cities.
What you gain
- Planned, not emergency, refuelling
- No running dry on route
- Fills at approved stations
How does Safee help you avoid running out of fuel?
Safee's Fuel Explorer shows at a glance which vehicles have dropped below the percentage set in the Low Indicator Configuration, along with the range the remaining fuel will cover. A supervisor can then arrange evening refuelling at the company station instead of a driver finding the tank low in the morning.
A field example
A school bus operator in Medina had two or three buses running late each month because drivers found the tank low in the morning. It set the low fuel indicator at 30% across its 120 buses, and a supervisor now checks the list of low buses every evening and sends them to the company station. No bus ran late for fuel reasons for the whole of the next term.
Frequently asked questions
What percentage should the low fuel indicator be set to?
20% to 30% suits most urban fleets; set it higher on long routes where stations are far apart.
Does a low fuel indicator work without a fuel sensor?
It needs a tank level reading, from the CAN Bus or a level sensor. A flow meter measures consumption only and gives no level.
