Reefer Unit
In Arabicوحدة التبريد
The refrigeration machine on an insulated truck body or trailer that cools the load and holds it at a set temperature for the whole trip.
What is a reefer unit in fleet management?
A reefer unit is a self-contained refrigeration machine, usually on the front of an insulated box, powered by its own diesel engine or the truck's electrics. It is set to a target called the setpoint, blows cold discharge air into the box and draws back return air to measure and re-cool it.
Units run either continuously or in start-stop mode to save fuel, and go through defrost cycles to clear ice from the evaporator coil. Many modern units, such as Thermo King, log their data and can be read remotely.
How it works
- 1Unit blows cold air into box
- 2Return air shows load temperature
- 3Unit adjusts cooling to setpoint
Why does a reefer unit matter in fleet management?
A failed or wrongly set unit can ruin a whole load within hours. Box temperature tells you there is a problem; the unit's own data tells you why: a wrong setpoint, an empty fuel tank or an iced-up coil. Running hours are also the right basis for scheduling the unit's servicing.
What you gain
- Wrong setpoints spotted early
- Unit fuel and faults tracked
- Servicing on running hours
How does Safee help you monitor the reefer unit?
With Thermo King units connected to the tracker, Safee's Thermo-King Explorer shows the unit's own data, including setpoint, return-air temperature, unit fuel level and fault codes. You learn why temperature rose, not just that it did, and can plan servicing on actual running hours. For other makes, a separate temperature probe does the job.
A field example
A pharma distributor in Riyadh saw two trailers holding 9 °C although both reefers were running. The unit data showed one set to 9 °C instead of 5 °C, and the other going into defrost far more often than normal. The setpoint was corrected, the second unit's coil was cleaned, and a setpoint check was added to the pre-trip list. The problem did not recur the following quarter.
Frequently asked questions
What is a reefer setpoint?
The temperature the unit aims to reach and hold. It must match the load requirements on the transport order.
What is the difference between continuous and start-stop mode?
In continuous mode the unit runs all the time, so temperature is steadier; in start-stop mode it cycles as needed and saves fuel. Continuous is preferred for pharma and fresh produce.
Can reefer data be read remotely?
Yes, on many modern units, including Thermo King, whose data Safee reads through the tracker. Other units are monitored with a separate temperature probe.
