Engine Hours
In Arabicساعات عمل المحرك
The total time a vehicle's engine has been running, whether the vehicle was moving or standing still.
What are engine hours in fleet management?
Engine hours are the main usage measure for heavy equipment and vehicles that work while parked, in the way kilometres are for cars and trucks. Every minute the engine turns counts, including idling and powering attachments such as cranes and pumps.
In Safee, engine hours appear on the vehicle card on the map, counted from ignition status since the tracker was installed, and are read directly over CAN Bus on vehicles that support it.
How it works
- 1Tracker reads ignition status
- 2System totals running time
- 3Hours shown on vehicle card and in reports
Why do engine hours matter in fleet management?
Engine hours set service schedules for equipment, expose costly idling when hours are high but distance is low, and underpin hire contracts billed by the hour. They are also among the first things a buyer asks about used equipment.
What you gain
- Basis for plant maintenance
- Exposes costly idling
- Reference for hourly hire billing
How does Safee help you track engine hours?
Safee totals each engine's running hours automatically and shows them on the vehicle card and in reports, so equipment servicing and hourly hire invoices rest on recorded hours, not operators' paper sheets. Comparing hours with distance exposes vehicles burning their hours idling.
A field example
A Jubail equipment hire company rents 30 wheel loaders to contractors on hourly contracts, with hours taken from paper sheets filled in by operators. A dispute broke out over a monthly invoice with a 140-hour discrepancy. The company made Safee engine hours the billing reference and attached the report to every invoice. Disputes stopped and billed hours rose 9%.
Frequently asked questions
How does a tracking system count engine hours?
From the time ignition stays on, as reported by the device, or directly from the engine's hour meter over CAN Bus where available.
Do engine hours include idling?
Yes, they include all time the engine runs, which is why comparing them with distance reveals excessive idling.
