Temperature Excursion

In Arabicانحراف درجة الحرارة

In short

Any period in which cargo temperature goes above or below its permitted range during transport or storage.

What is a temperature excursion in fleet management?

A temperature excursion is a Good Distribution Practice term used in food and pharma logistics. It happens when temperature rises above the upper limit or falls below the lower one, and is documented by three details: duration, peak value and location.

Not every excursion means lost product. Quality assurance compares it with the manufacturer's stability data and decides whether to release, quarantine or destroy the load. Accidental freezing is an excursion too, and for medicines and vaccines it can be worse than warming.

How it works

  1. 1Temperature leaves the set range
  2. 2System logs duration, peak, location
  3. 3QA decides what happens to load

Why does a temperature excursion matter in fleet management?

An undetected excursion reaches the customer as damaged stock; one found too late gets the whole load written off as a precaution. A precisely documented excursion lets QA assess the load instead of destroying it, and shows the cause, whether an open door, a long stop or a failing reefer, so it does not happen again.

What you gain

  • Loads assessed, not written off
  • Duration, peak and place recorded
  • Root cause found and fixed

How does Safee help document a temperature excursion?

Safee stores every temperature reading with its time and position, so each excursion comes with a full record: when it started, how high it went, where the truck was and whether the door was open. That is what QA needs to decide quickly, and what you need to tell a driver error from a reefer fault.

A field example

Dubai · Pharma distribution

A pharma distributor in Dubai had a reefer fail in midday traffic on a truck carrying AED 400,000 of 2 to 8 °C medicines. The alarm reached the supervisor, who sent the truck to the nearest cold store. The log showed a peak of 11 °C lasting 35 minutes. QA checked this against the manufacturer's stability data and released the entire load instead of destroying it.

Frequently asked questions

Does every temperature excursion mean the cargo is spoiled?

No. It depends on duration, peak value and the product, which is why it must be documented precisely before QA decides.

What is the difference between a temperature excursion and a temperature alarm?

The excursion is the event itself, temperature leaving its range. The alarm is the alert that tells you about it as it happens.

Does a drop below the range count as an excursion?

Yes, and for medicines and vaccines it can be the more serious case, since some are damaged by even brief freezing.
