Driving Hours and Rest Periods
In Arabicساعات القيادة وفترات الراحة
The limits a regulator or company sets on continuous and daily driving time, and on the mandatory rest between them.
What are driving hours and rest periods in fleet management?
These rules settle three things: how long a driver drives before stopping, how long they rest, and how many hours they drive a day and a week. Rules in the region follow a similar pattern: Oman's 2020 decision and Saudi Arabia's Transport General Authority rules for bus drivers both set 9 hours' driving a day and a 45-minute break after every 4.5 hours.
Many companies add their own rules, such as a short break every two hours. Trackers log driving and stops automatically instead of paper logbooks.
How it works
- 1Set driving and rest limits
- 2Device logs driving and stops
- 3Violation when a limit is passed
Why do driving hours and rest periods matter in fleet management?
Fatigue builds quietly; a driver five hours in without a break reacts more slowly than one who has rested. Enforcing driving hours prevents fall-asleep crashes, protects the company when a client or regulator asks for rest records, and avoids fines where regulations impose them.
What you gain
- Fewer fatigue crashes
- Audit-ready rest records
- Fairer spread of driving hours
How does Safee help enforce driving hours and rest periods?
Safee works out each driver's continuous and accumulated driving time from device data, and the Driver Excessive Continuous Driving and Driver Excessive Accumulative Driving alarm conditions alert you when a driver passes your limit without enough rest. Breaches are collected in the Driver driving violations report, which doubles as a rest record for audits.
A field example
A freight company running 30 trucks daily between Riyadh and Dammam had two night-time crashes in a year. It set an internal limit of two hours' continuous driving followed by 15 minutes' rest, and the data showed 40% of trips ran without a single stop. The company added a mandatory rest stop midway. Violations fell to 6% of trips, and there were no night crashes the following year.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours a day may a driver drive?
In Oman, and for bus drivers in Saudi Arabia, 9 hours a day, extendable to 10 hours twice a week. Always check the rules that apply to your vehicle type and activity.
How do continuous driving and accumulated driving hours fit into these rules?
They are the two measures the rules put limits on: continuous driving caps each stint before a break, and accumulated driving hours cap the total over a day or week, however many breaks are taken. A driver can respect one and break the other, so each needs its own limit.
