Engine-Hours-Based Maintenance
In Arabicالصيانة حسب ساعات عمل المحرك
Scheduling service every time the engine runs a set number of hours, whether the vehicle moves or stands still.
What is engine-hours-based maintenance in fleet management?
Heavy equipment and vehicles that work while parked, such as cranes, mixers, vacuum tankers and site generators, wear their engines without covering much distance. Their service is measured in operating hours rather than kilometres, which is how equipment manufacturers specify it.
In Safee this is the Periodic Ignition Time Elapsed trigger: it fires an alarm each time the engine has run for the set time, counted from ignition status. It can be combined with distance (Periodic Distance or Ignition Time) to fire at whichever limit comes first.
How it works
- 1Engine hours between services set
- 2Running time totalled from ignition
- 3Alarm when hours are reached
Why does engine-hours-based maintenance matter in fleet management?
A truck parked at a well site for hours with its engine driving a pump can need an oil change long before it covers half its service distance. Relying on kilometres alone delays service and shortens engine life. Engine hours reflect real wear and help protect equipment warranties.
What you gain
- Suits plant and crane trucks
- Counts idling and stationary work
- Matches manufacturer service schedules
How does Safee help with engine-hours-based maintenance?
Safee counts engine running hours from ignition status, whether the vehicle moves or stands, and alerts you when service is due. For vehicles that both drive and work stationary, distance and hours can be combined so service falls due at whichever comes first.
A field example
An oil-field services firm in Sohar runs 25 crane trucks that sit at well sites for hours with engines powering the cranes. It changed oil every 10,000 km, but Safee showed some trucks logging 600 engine hours before reaching that distance. The firm switched to service at 10,000 km or 250 hours, whichever came first, and engine failures the following year fell from five to one.
Frequently asked questions
Why is heavy equipment serviced by hours instead of kilometres?
Because its engine runs most of the time while stationary or crawling, so distance does not reflect wear. Operating hours are the measure manufacturers use.
How does the system count engine hours?
It totals the time ignition is on, as reported by the tracker. On vehicles with CAN Bus, the engine's own Total Engine Hours reading is also available.
