Fuel Efficiency
In Arabicكفاءة استهلاك الوقود
The distance a vehicle covers on one litre of fuel, in kilometres per litre; the higher the figure, the more economical the vehicle.
What is fuel efficiency in fleet management?
Fuel efficiency is the other side of consumption: instead of asking how many litres were burned per 100 km, you ask how many kilometres one litre bought. Divide 100 by the consumption rate: a truck using 25 litres per 100 km runs at 4 km/L.
Four things drive it: the vehicle's condition (tyres, filters, injectors), driving style, load and road type. That is why it is managed by comparing like vehicles on the same routes, not by one fleet-wide number.
How it works
- 1Collect distance and fuel per vehicle
- 2Divide distance by litres used
- 3Compare with similar vehicles
Why does fuel efficiency matter in fleet management?
Efficiency is one number both driver and manager understand, and it works as a monthly target. A 5% gain across 100 trucks saves thousands of litres a month. It is also an early fault signal: when one vehicle's efficiency drops with no change of route or driver, the cause is often under-inflated tyres, a clogged air filter or an injector due for service.
What you gain
- Clear target for drivers
- Early warning of faults
- Fair comparison across vehicles
How does Safee help improve fuel efficiency?
Safee gives you distance and actual fuel used for every vehicle and driver over any period, so you can compare efficiency across like vehicles and catch one that is slipping before the slip becomes a breakdown. Because it also records driving behaviour, you can tell whether the cause is the vehicle or the driver.
A field example
A parcel delivery company in Muscat runs 70 vans of one model, averaging 9 km/L. The monthly comparison showed 9 vans had slipped to about 7.5 km/L over two months, though their routes and drivers had not changed. The workshop found most had under-inflated tyres and dust-clogged air filters. After servicing and weekly tyre-pressure checks, those vans were back to 8.8 km/L within three weeks.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert litres per 100 km to km per litre?
Divide 100 by the figure. 12.5 litres per 100 km equals 8 km/L.
What lowers fuel efficiency most in a fleet?
Long idling, high speed, harsh acceleration and braking, overloading, low tyre pressure and overdue maintenance.
How is fuel efficiency different from eco-driving?
Fuel efficiency is the result, measured in km per litre. Eco-driving is a driving style that improves it, one factor alongside vehicle condition, load and road.
