Mobile Digital Video Recorder (MDVR)

In Arabicمسجّل الفيديو الرقمي المتنقل (MDVR)

In short

A central in-vehicle recorder that several cameras plug into; it stores their footage and sends live video and clips to the platform over the mobile network.

What is a mobile digital video recorder (MDVR) in fleet management?

The MDVR is the heart of the video system on buses and trucks. It typically takes 4 to 8 cameras: road-facing, driver-facing, rear, and passenger cabin or cargo. It records continuously to a hard drive or memory card and sends live streams and event clips over the mobile link; many models add AI analysis of the driver and the road.

In Safee the recorder works under the V-IVMS video service: live view, playback, alarm clips and, on the Platinum licence, requests for any period from its storage.

How it works

  1. 1Cameras record continuously to the MDVR
  2. 2Clip requested for a set period
  3. 3MDVR uploads it when running

Why does a mobile digital video recorder (MDVR) matter in fleet management?

After a collision, a customer complaint or an insurance claim, recorded footage settles the facts in minutes rather than weeks of investigation. Several cameras show the road, the driver and the passengers together. Without a recorder, the fleet is left between conflicting accounts with nothing to decide between them.

What you gain

  • Video evidence for incidents
  • Several angles at once
  • Retrieve any clip remotely

How does Safee help you reach MDVR footage remotely?

Safee lets you watch a vehicle's cameras live, play back recordings, and request a clip for a set period from the recorder's storage without going to the vehicle. If the vehicle is switched off, the request waits until it starts, so nothing is lost and no one has to chase it.

A field example

Dubai · Staff transport

A Dubai staff-transport operator received a passenger complaint accusing a driver of reckless driving on Sheikh Zayed Road. The supervisor pulled a 6-minute clip from the forward and cabin cameras. It showed the driver within the limit and another car swerving in front of him. The complaint was closed the same day, and the operator now reviews every complaint on video within 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an MDVR and a dashcam?

A dashcam is a single unit with one or two lenses; an MDVR is a central recorder that several cameras plug into and that handles storage and transmission, which suits buses and trucks.

Why has a requested clip not arrived while the vehicle is parked?

The recorder usually goes offline when the engine is off, so the request runs once the vehicle starts again.

How much footage does an MDVR keep?

It depends on storage size, camera count and recording quality; usually days to weeks before the oldest footage is overwritten.
