GPS Tracker
In Arabicجهاز التتبع
A device fitted in the vehicle that fixes its position by satellite, reads its status and sends the data to the platform over a SIM.
What is a GPS tracker in fleet management?
A GPS tracker is a small unit wired to vehicle power, holding a satellite receiver, a SIM and memory. It records position, speed and heading, reads ignition state and whatever is connected to its inputs, such as fuel, temperature and door sensors or a driver ID reader, plus CAN Bus data where available, and sends it all in periodic messages.
Safee calls it the tracker unit and identifies each one by IMEI, type and model, because each device type uses its own protocol.
How it works
- 1Tracker fixes position, reads inputs
- 2Sends periodic messages over the network
- 3Platform identifies it by IMEI
Why does a GPS tracker matter in fleet management?
Everything a fleet manager sees on screen comes from this box. The right device, properly installed, decides how accurate distances, alarms and fuel reports are. A cheap or carelessly fitted unit means data gaps and reports that will not stand up in front of a customer or regulator.
What you gain
- Reliable data behind every report
- Sensor and CAN Bus readings in one place
- Remote control of the vehicle
How does Safee help you choose GPS trackers?
Safee receives messages from trackers of many makes and protocols, so you are not tied to one model and can mix devices in one fleet. The Safee team can add a protocol for a new device when needed.
A field example
A Dammam oil-field services firm was losing data from 15 of its 120 trucks for hours at rig sites. Inspection found the units under seats with their antennas shielded by metal. They were refitted behind the dashboard with external antennas, and weekly hours of missing data fell from 90 to under 10.
Frequently asked questions
How is a GPS tracker different from a phone tracking app?
The tracker is fixed in the vehicle, runs on its power and reads its sensors; an app follows the driver's phone and stops when the phone is off or leaves the vehicle.
Does a tracker work without mobile coverage?
Most units store messages and send them when coverage returns; for very remote areas there are satellite devices.
