IoT SIM
In Arabicشريحة إنترنت الأشياء
A SIM built for machines rather than people, which a tracker uses to send its data over the mobile network to the platform.
What is an IoT SIM in fleet management?
Every tracker needs a SIM to report. IoT or M2M SIMs come from mobile operators on small data plans priced for devices; some roam across several networks, and all can be managed in bulk from the operator's portal. Each SIM has its own ICCID, separate from the tracker's IMEI.
In Safee the SIM number is stored with the tracker's details, and the ICCID appears once the device reports it.
How it works
- 1SIM goes into the tracker
- 2Tracker sends data over mobile network
- 3SIM numbers stored with device
Why does an IoT SIM matter in fleet management?
An expired or suspended SIM is the most common reason a vehicle goes silent, and it is often mistaken for a faulty tracker, so a technician goes out for nothing. Recording the ICCID for every device speeds up dealings with the operator and exposes SIMs taken out of trackers for other use.
What you gain
- Keeps trackers connected
- Controlled data costs
- SIMs managed in bulk
How does Safee help you manage IoT SIMs?
Safee stores the SIM number and serial with each tracker, so you know which SIM is in which vehicle without opening the unit. When a group of vehicles goes quiet together, those numbers quickly show whether their SIMs share an expired plan. Where there is no mobile coverage, Safee also offers satellite communication.
A field example
A water-tanker company in Sohar lost contact with 22 tankers in one day and sent technicians to check the units. The recorded ICCIDs showed every silent SIM came from the same batch, whose plan had lapsed. The plan was renewed and all SIMs moved to a pooled M2M plan, with no repeat outage that year.
Frequently asked questions
Can an ordinary phone SIM work in a tracker?
Technically yes, but an M2M SIM fits better: cheaper small plans, bulk management, and in some types better tolerance of heat and vibration.
What is the difference between ICCID and IMEI?
The ICCID identifies the SIM; the IMEI identifies the tracker. Swapping the SIM changes the ICCID and leaves the IMEI untouched.
How much data does a tracker use a month?
It depends on the reporting interval and sensors, typically from a few to a few dozen megabytes. Video units use far more.
