Fuel Drain Detection
In Arabicرصد تفريغ الوقود
Automatic detection of a rapid fall in tank level that driving cannot explain, logged with litres, place and time.
What is fuel drain detection in fleet management?
In telematics, a drain is an event logged when the tank level falls sharply in a short time. The cause may be theft, a leaking fuel line or a legitimate transfer to a site generator; the system catches the event, and your investigation finds the reason.
In Safee, drains are detected by the Fuel Theft alarm condition, which rests on three thresholds: a minimum emptying threshold, a time window it must be exceeded within, and a speed above which a drop is not counted, because fuel sloshing on the move looks similar. It needs a tank level reading.
How it works
- 1Level drops past the minimum
- 2System checks time window and speed
- 3Event logged with litres and place
Why does fuel drain detection matter in fleet management?
An event stamped with minute and location turns suspicion into evidence: which vehicle, where, and how many litres. Set the thresholds carelessly and the screen fills with false alarms from rough roads or trucks parked on a slope; supervisors start ignoring them and the real case gets lost among them.
What you gain
- Litres, place and time per event
- Catches leaks as well as theft
- Fewer false alarms
How does Safee help with fuel drain detection?
Safee sends an instant alert on any sudden drop in tank level, and monitoring can be limited to particular hours and places, such as overnight or outside approved sites. Cases are gathered per vehicle in the Fuel fill/theft report, so you see the recurring pattern, not just the single event.
A field example
A construction haulier in Dubai started drain detection with a 10-litre threshold and got more than 40 alarms a day, mostly from trucks parked on site ramps. It raised the threshold to 30 litres and the time window to 10 minutes, and alarms fell to two or three a week. One of them exposed a split fuel line on a truck parked overnight at a site, which lost about 40 litres in a few minutes; it was fixed the same day.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a fuel drain and fuel theft?
A drain is what the sensor sees: a rapid loss from the tank. Theft is one possible cause; a leak or a legitimate transfer are others.
Why do I get drain alarms while the vehicle is moving or parked on a slope?
Fuel sloshes with motion and tilts with the ground, so the sensor reads a drop that did not happen. A speed threshold and a longer time window cut these alarms.
Can fuel drains be detected without a level sensor?
A tank level reading is essential, from a sensor or CAN Bus. A flow meter alone does not provide one.
