Cold Chain
In Arabicسلسلة التبريد
Storing and moving temperature-sensitive goods within a set temperature range, without a break, from producer to customer.
What is a cold chain in fleet management?
The cold chain is every storage, loading, transport and handover step that chilled food, frozen food and medicines pass through, with temperature held in range throughout: 2 to 8 °C for most medicines, −18 °C or colder for frozen goods. The chain breaks the moment any step goes out of range.
In a fleet the chain rests on three things: an insulated body, a reefer unit that holds the temperature, and sensors that record what actually happened on each trip.
How it works
- 1Reefer unit holds box temperature
- 2Sensors log temperature with location
- 3Platform checks range and alerts
Why does a cold chain matter in fleet management?
A broken chain means spoiled or rejected loads, and one hour out of range can write off a whole consignment. The temperature record is the carrier's evidence in any dispute and what regulators ask for; in Saudi Arabia, the SFDA requires meat, poultry and fish businesses to send temperature and humidity readings from their vehicles to the WASL platform.
What you gain
- Temperature record for every trip
- Faults caught before cargo spoils
- Compliance proven at inspection
How does Safee help protect the cold chain?
Safee puts each reefer truck's position, box temperature and door status on one screen, so you see a problem while the truck is still on the road. The Temperature in Range alarm condition fires an instant alarm when temperature leaves its range, and the stored log feeds the Daily Temperature Report and answers customer complaints.
A field example
A frozen-food distributor in Jeddah had three complaints in one month from a supermarket chain about soft product on delivery. The temperature log showed the box rising to −8 °C on every route with more than 12 drops. The company capped routes at 10 drops and added an alarm for anything above −15 °C for more than 10 minutes. No complaints came in over the next two months.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the cold chain and refrigerated transport?
Refrigerated transport is one step; the cold chain also covers storage, loading and handover at delivery.
What temperature range does the cold chain require?
It depends on the product: 2 to 8 °C for most medicines and vaccines, roughly 0 to 4 °C for chilled meat and dairy, and −18 °C or colder for frozen goods.
Is a standard GPS tracker enough to monitor the cold chain?
No, it only knows location. You need a temperature probe connected to it, wired or wireless.
