Overloading
In Arabicالحمولة الزائدة
Loading a vehicle beyond its permitted gross weight or the limit of any one axle, or filling a tanker above its rated capacity.
What is overloading in fleet management?
A vehicle is overloaded when its gross weight exceeds the legal limit, or when one axle exceeds its own limit even if the total is fine. For tankers it also covers filling beyond rated capacity. Gulf road authorities check weights at fixed and mobile weigh stations, fine offenders and can hold the vehicle until the load is reduced.
The usual causes are loading by count or volume instead of weight, and material whose density changes from batch to batch.
How it works
- 1Sensors weigh the truck while loading
- 2System compares it with the limit
- 3Alert arrives before the truck leaves
Why does overloading matter in fleet management?
Overloading lengthens stopping distance, overheats tyres and brakes and breaks up roads faster. The cost lands directly on the operator: fines, delays at weigh stations, early spring and axle failures, and greater liability after a crash. Catching it at the loading point avoids all of that.
What you gain
- Fewer fines and roadside holds
- Less brake and spring damage
- Safer roads for everyone
How does Safee help prevent overloading?
Safee's Load Weight Limit alarm condition raises an instant alarm when a truck's load goes over the upper load limit you set, ignoring momentary spikes during loading or over bumps. The alert arrives while the truck is still at the loading site, so the excess comes off before departure instead of turning into a fine. For WASL-linked fleets, violations also appear in the WASL Violations Report.
A field example
A road contractor in Abu Dhabi hauls aggregate from the quarries with 60 tippers and paid more than AED 90,000 in overload fines in one quarter. Once the alarm was running inside the quarry, it found a third of the violations came from one loader operator on the evening shift. The operator was retrained and the supervisor now trims loads before the tipper leaves. Fines dropped below AED 10,000 the next quarter.
Frequently asked questions
Can I be fined if my gross weight is within the limit?
Yes, if any axle is over its limit. Weigh stations measure each axle or axle group separately.
How do I stop overloading before the truck leaves?
With axle weight sensors and an alert that reaches the supervisor during loading, or with a weighbridge at the site gate.
Can overloading be detected without weight sensors?
Not in real time. The only alternative is a weighbridge at the exit of the loading site.
