Driver Authorisation

Defining which drivers may start each vehicle, so the tracker only enables the engine for an ID on that vehicle's list.
What is driver authorisation in fleet management?
Driver authorisation is a list, held by the tracker in each vehicle, of the people allowed to drive it. When a driver presents his ID, the unit checks it on board and either enables the engine or keeps it disabled.
In Safee these lists are managed remotely: you add drivers to vehicles or remove them through commands the platform sends to the units, one at a time or for whole groups at once. List capacity depends on the unit; some hold 500 drivers.
How it works
- 1Choose the drivers allowed per vehicle
- 2Unit stores the list on board
- 3Unit checks the ID before start-up
Why does driver authorisation matter in fleet management?
Authorisation stops the wrong people starting the vehicle: a driver without the right licence class, an employee using the truck privately, or someone whose contract has ended. It also makes sure every trip and violation is recorded against a known driver, so performance and accountability reports can be trusted.
What you gain
- Blocks unauthorised vehicle use
- Matches licence to vehicle class
- Revokes access the day someone leaves
How does Safee help manage driver authorisation?
Safee sends authorisation lists to the units over the air, so you can give a new driver access to his branch's vehicles, or remove a leaver, without visiting a single vehicle. If a vehicle is out of coverage, the command waits for it to connect and you can follow its status in the commands history until it lands.
A field example
A pharmaceutical distributor in Jeddah runs 60 refrigerated vans shared by 110 drivers, and found some vans being started at night by drivers who were not on the rota. It authorised each driver only on his own branch's vans in one bulk action and revoked 14 drivers whose contracts had ended. Within two months out-of-shift use stopped and every trip carried a named driver.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between driver authorisation and driver identification?
Identification tells you who is driving now; authorisation decides who may drive at all. The unit reads the ID first, then checks it against the authorised list.
Why has authorisation not reached some vehicles?
The command waits for the tracker to connect. If the vehicle stays parked or out of coverage for more than a week, the command times out and must be resent.
Does authorisation work with every tracker?
No. It needs a unit that supports a driver ID reader and authorisation commands, and list capacity depends on the unit firmware.
