Excessive Overspeed
In Arabicتجاوز السرعة المفرط
Driving above a second, higher threshold than the normal speed limit, treated as a serious violation separate from ordinary speeding.
What is excessive overspeed in fleet management?
Safety policies in oil and gas and heavy haulage usually split speeding into two grades: speeding, and excessive overspeed above a second, higher threshold, each weighted differently in driver scoring. An in-cab buzzer often comes first, so the driver can correct before a violation is counted.
IVMS set-ups built on the SP-2000 standard apply this in three stages: Buzzer Alarm, Over Speed, then Excessive Overspeed, and the results feed colour-ranked driver scoring.
How it works
- 1Buzzer warns the driver in the cab
- 2Overspeed logged above the limit
- 3Serious alarm raised above the upper limit
Why does excessive overspeed matter in fleet management?
Crash energy rises with the square of speed, so a crash at 140 km/h carries roughly twice the energy of one at 100 km/h. Separating excessive overspeed from minor speeding lets managers act on the dangerous cases at once instead of losing them among hundreds of minor speeding events, and the buzzer gives drivers a chance to correct before they are held to account.
What you gain
- Serious violations stand out
- Driver warned before the violation
- Fairer driver scoring
How does Safee help catch excessive overspeed?
Safee applies tiered speed limits following SP-2000 and keeps excessive overspeed separate from ordinary speeding in alarms and driver-scoring reports. Supervisors get an instant alert for the serious cases only, and minor speeding waits for the regular review.
A field example
A haulage contractor in Jubail runs 90 trucks between plants and the port, and its violation reports showed more than 600 speeding events a month with no clear priority. Once the two grades were separated, only 38 turned out to be excessive, and six drivers accounted for half of them. Those six went through defensive-driving training and a written warning. Two months later excessive-speeding events were down to nine and most drivers had moved into the green band.
Frequently asked questions
At what speed does overspeed become excessive?
Your company policy or your client's standard sets it. What matters is that it sits clearly above the ordinary limit and carries a stronger response.
What is the difference between excessive overspeed and speeding?
Speeding is any driving above the set limit; excessive overspeed means crossing a second, higher limit and is treated as a serious violation.
