Work Zone

In Arabicمنطقة العمل

In short

The approved area where a vehicle is meant to operate, such as a city, project site or service territory, so that driving outside it can be measured and flagged.

What is a work zone in fleet management?

A work zone is where a vehicle is expected to work: a delivery territory, a construction project, a concession area or the city a pool vehicle is assigned to. Driving outside it is not always wrong, but it needs explaining, and if it also happens outside working hours it usually means personal use or a side job.

In a tracking system a work zone is drawn as one or more geofences. It is the opposite of a restricted zone: instead of alerting on entry, the system measures how far and how long a vehicle drives outside it.

How it works

  1. 1Work zone drawn as geofences
  2. 2Driving outside it measured
  3. 3Alarm when the limit is passed

Why does a work zone matter in fleet management?

Every kilometre outside the work zone is fuel, wear and time the company pays for with no work in return, and a vehicle far from its zone is not available when a new job comes in. And when a client pays for vehicles dedicated to its site, driving elsewhere can breach the contract.

What you gain

  • Fewer kilometres off the job
  • Vehicles where the work needs them
  • Proof for dedicated-vehicle contracts

How does Safee help keep vehicles within their work zones?

In Safee, the Distance out Working Places & Hours alarm condition measures the distance and time a vehicle drives outside the work places and hours you define, and raises an alarm when the distance passes the limit you set. The Vehicle Out of Work Zone report lists every violation per vehicle: who drove where they should not, when and how far.

A field example

Buraidah · Water network maintenance

A water network maintenance contractor in Buraidah assigns its 45 service vehicles to four city sectors. With fuel use out of line with the jobs completed, it drew each sector as a work zone and set an alarm for more than 10 km a day outside the zone and working hours. The first month showed 2,900 km out of zone, 70% of it by 8 vehicles on evening trips to Unaizah. After drivers were briefed and two of them lost take-home use of their vehicles, the figure fell to 600 km in the third month.

Frequently asked questions

How is a work zone different from a restricted zone?

A restricted zone marks where a vehicle must not go and alerts on entry. A work zone marks where it should stay and measures driving outside it.

Does "work zone" also mean roadworks?

In road safety, yes: it is a stretch of road under construction or repair with lower speed limits. In fleet management it usually means the area a vehicle is assigned to, which is the meaning here.
