Speed Limiter

In Arabicمحدد السرعة

In short

A device that caps a vehicle's top speed by limiting engine power, so the vehicle cannot exceed a set value however hard the driver presses the accelerator.

What is a speed limiter in fleet management?

A speed limiter cuts fuel or reduces engine power once the vehicle reaches a preset speed. Most modern trucks and buses have one in the engine control unit; older vehicles can take an add-on unit. In Europe, trucks over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 90 km/h and buses to 100 km/h, and Gulf traffic authorities have made limiters compulsory for some vehicle classes, such as commercial buses in the UAE.

A limiter stops speeding above its setting but not below it, in towns or on work sites; tracking data closes that gap by measuring every speed against the road, vehicle and site limits.

How it works

  1. 1Limit set in the engine or device
  2. 2Power cut at the set speed
  3. 3Tracking data confirms the cap holds

Why does a speed limiter matter in fleet management?

Speed is a factor in many of the worst truck and bus crashes, and a limiter takes the highest speeds off the table without relying on the driver, while cutting highway fuel use and wear on tyres and brakes. But limiters get tampered with or fail without anyone noticing, so a fleet needs an independent check that they still work.

What you gain

  • Top speed capped on every trip
  • Lower fuel use on highways
  • Tampering exposed by tracking data

How does Safee help you check that speed limiters work?

Safee shows whether the limiter actually works: set the vehicle's speeding alarm a few km/h above the limiter value, and any alarm becomes evidence that the limiter has been disabled or has failed, while the speed report shows each vehicle's maximum speed over the period. Below the limiter value, the usual speeding and Speed Inside a Geofence alarms cover towns and sites.

A field example

Ajman · Staff bus transport

A staff transport company in Ajman runs 60 buses with factory-fitted limiters. After one bus was fined for a speed well above its limit, the fleet team set each bus's speeding alarm in Safee 5 km/h above its limiter value. Within two weeks 4 buses raised repeated alarms at 112 to 118 km/h; the limiter turned out to be disconnected on two and faulty on the other two. All four were repaired, the drivers were warned in writing, and no bus exceeded its limiter over the next three months.

Frequently asked questions

Can a speed limiter be bypassed?

Yes. Add-on units can be disconnected and engine settings changed, which is why fleets check maximum speeds in tracking data rather than relying on the limiter alone.

If vehicles have limiters, are speed alarms still needed?

Yes. A limiter caps only the top speed; most speeding happens below it, in towns, on work sites and in residential areas, and only alarms set to the right limit catch it.
