Driver Fatigue

In Arabicإرهاق السائق

In short

A drop in a driver's alertness caused by long driving, lack of sleep or night work, and one of the most dangerous causes of crashes.

What is driver fatigue in fleet management?

Fatigue cannot be measured directly, so fleets manage it two ways: preventing its causes with driving-hours and rest-period rules and limits on night driving, and detecting its signs at the wheel with driver status monitoring (DSM) cameras. Together this is known as fatigue management.

In Safee the limits come from the Driver Excessive Continuous Driving, Driver Excessive Accumulative Driving and Out of Working Hours alarm conditions, the signs from V-IVMS drowsiness and yawn alarms, and the monthly RALG report rates each driver on fatigue rest, fatigue max hours and night driving.

How it works

  1. 1Rest rules set the limits
  2. 2Alarms and cameras catch breaches and drowsiness
  3. 3Monthly rating ranks drivers

Why does driver fatigue matter in fleet management?

Fatigue crashes tend to happen at speed with no attempt to brake, so they are more severe than most. In the Gulf, long desert routes, heat and night shifts add to the risk. Managing fatigue saves lives and is a core safety requirement for energy-sector clients.

What you gain

  • Fewer drowsiness crashes
  • Drowsiness caught as it happens
  • Documented compliance for clients

How does Safee help reduce driver fatigue?

Safee brings both sides of fatigue management together: alarms for driving-hours breaches and night driving, and drowsiness alarms from DSM cameras. A monthly rating per driver then shows who keeps showing signs of fatigue, so you can act before a crash.

A field example

Salalah · Intercity freight

A freight company in Salalah runs trips of about 1,000 km to Muscat and had two drowsiness-related crashes in one year. It set a 4-hour continuous and 9-hour daily driving limit and fitted DSM cameras to 20 trucks. The data showed most drowsiness alarms on trips leaving after midnight, so departures moved to early morning with a mandatory overnight stop midway. There were no fatigue crashes the following year, and drowsiness alarms fell 65%.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main signs of driver fatigue?

Repeated yawning, heavy eyelids, slow drifting out of lane and unexplained swings in speed.

Are driving-hours rules enough to prevent fatigue?

No. They tackle the visible causes only; a driver can start a shift already short of sleep, which is where a DSM camera helps.
